Hey fellow truth seekers. I have a hypothetical situation for you tonight and I'd like your earnest, honest feedback. Where do you shift that line in the sand which separates the truth over individual protection? Do you sacrifice the individual for what you believe is the greater good, or does the greater good come down to individual liberty, privacy, and freedom of choice?
As always, Star Trek quotes welcome and appreciated. ;)
Truth is subjective, in most cases wouldn't you be sacrificing before you gain that truth? In the end, you take a risk for something that may mean nothing to you.
The goal is not to sacrifice anything for the truth. It doesn't have to be at the loss of your liberty, privacy, and freedom of choice.
In fact, it is these qualities that should drive us for the truth and losing those qualities is not worth any truth.
It's not a sacrifice if it doesn't mean anything to me. It would mean something to me. I've never set out to hurt anyone but I think not getting the truth out hurts people too. People should know.
But I agree with you there has to be a solution, to inform the general public without stepping on anyone's personal liberties.
What kind of solution would that look like? Would it still be a compromise, sacrificing at least something in order to protect?
We can't hand feed people either. I think those who want to know the truth are going to be the ones who look for it and find it.
History books, for example, people are satisfied enough to reference it for their comfort. School books, the stuff we teach our kids.. if that what they want for their truth then who are we to argue with them?
Nobody is entitled to this, but everyone is free to find the truth for themselves.
I'm well, thanks. I'm on the road again, up in the Oregon mountains, where all the interesting things happen.
I feel as if it's my responsibility, if I've found out any truths, to bring it to those who aren't able or have access to find it themselves though. What do you think?
We can't define the truth for everyone, because everyone's journey is different. Even if you were to present to people they may not accept it, see it.. Let's not forget the many crusades in the name of truth.
I'm sure the infamous sacrifice is still one of the best played representations of what happens when you try to bring truth to this world. You get crucified.
I've missed your cynicism, Proxy. I won't say the name of the town, for their sake. You make a good argument and I appreciate your comparing me to Christ on a Cross.
It isn't redemption that I'm offering though, it's a chance to understand our world and get some perspective. Christ wanted followers and offered miracles. I want free-thinkers and offer it through truth.
I don't think you appreciate the impact of truth. Were you to really get people to see what you found, if they were to believe.. who do you think they're going to follow? Themselves? I doubt it. No, they're going to follow you. After all, you brought them to this realization and you think they're going to wander off on their own using their free-thinking skills? No, you hand fed them the truth and they'll only be hungry for more of it.
As much as someone eating out of my hand sounds interesting...
I guess even after all this time, I still have hope in humanity, that we're not all just sheep looking for another wolf to herd us in one direction or a shepherd to herd us in another.
I never wanted to be a shepherd. Or a wolf.
The town I'm in was hit badly by the storm but they have this amazing five-star shelter. I've stayed in expensive hotels worse than this.
It is. There is antique furniture, old paintings, all the food I could eat (good food, too, it's under a restaurant if you can believe that). They even have reading rooms with old books.
I never hated the thought of returning to my water bed so much as I do right now.
There's also the fact that a few hours ago you were talking about taking care of me.
I can't believe that you don't know son_of_apollo well enough to believe that I would do anything to hurt the beings in this town, so I can't believe you knew who I was before tonight.
Or, do you enjoy complicated love/hate relationships?

The offer of exchanging pictures is still there, any time you're up for it.
I don't have Christ's lovely locks, fair warning on that one.
